Sterzing is a real treasure trove.

And here are its jewels:

Zwölferturm tower

It stands proudly in the centre of the town, watching over the inhabitants. For Sterzing locals, it’s both a meeting point and timekeeper, a cool place for a rendezvous in summer, and a scenic backdrop on strolls through the town in winter: the Zwölferturm tower. On selected days, it opens its narrow door to reveal a staircase that leads right to the top. Basically: It’s the town landmark.

Mt Cavallo/Rosskopf

Sterzing’s local mountain is incredibly versatile and a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts all year round. Sporty folk can scale Mt Cavallo/Rosskopf on foot or by bike from the Schwarzer Adler, or if you’d prefer to ascend in a little more comfort, the lift takes you from the valley station (a 10-minute walk away from the hotel) to the top in next to no time. Once you reach the mountain station, a multitude of possibilities opens up to you. Hikes, ski adventures, or a speedy ride on Europe’s longest toboggan run await. All you have to do? Decide what takes your fancy.

Tasso/Reifenstein castle

Visible from far and wide, Tasso/Reifenstein castle sits on a hill to the south of Sterzing and stands watch over kilometres upon kilometres of Wipptal. Once ruled by the lords of Stilfes, this stunning castle is today cared for by the Thurn and Taxis family, who are lovingly preserving it for future generations. You can not only marvel at the castle from the outside, but also take a look inside, where parlours, kitchen, and the famous Green Hall are just waiting to be admired.

Stanghe/Gilfenklamm gorge

The river thunders over steep rock faces, its spray forming a fine mist. What could be more pleasant and peaceful on a hot summer day than a hike through Stanghe/Gilfenklamm gorge? The hike begins in Stange, and you can get tickets directly at the entrance. Please note: The gorge is not suitable for most dogs. However, this summer day trip is a real must for their humans!

Wolfsthurn castle

South Tyrol’s only baroque castle stands in a slightly elevated position in Mareit near Sterzing and enjoys magnificent views eastwards over the valley. Still owned by the Sternbach family today, the castle is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing. For everyone who loves hiking with a specific destination in mind, we recommend a leisurely walk from the Schwarzer Adler to Mareit. Once you reach the castle, don’t forget to count the number of windows. Legend says that the castle boasts exactly … how many windows? We won’t spoil the surprise. Why not discuss it over an aperitif in our Italian restaurant?

Ridnaun mine

You can experience the world of the silver miners up close in the Ridnaun mining museum. As you make your way through the narrow tunnels, you’ll get a glimpse into the working life of the miners. The permanent exhibition at the museum not only shows the work, but also the private lives of the families in Val Ridanna/Ridnaunertal. If you want to enjoy an extraordinary day trip, we highly recommend a visit to the mining museum combined with a refreshment stop in Ridnaun. It’s a perfect destination for kids and adults on hot summer days – or when it’s raining.

Rifugio Bicchiere/Becherhaus hut

There’s a good reason why Rifugio Bicchiere/Becherhaus hut is known all over South Tyrol – and beyond. The impressive mountain hut at 3,195 metres above sea level is the highest mountain hut in the province. How do you get there? Well equipped and with good fitness levels. Once you arrive up at the hut, the high-Alpine environment, the views of the rugged peaks all around, and the warmth of the team make for an unforgettable experience. A quick tip: The little “Maria im Schnee” chapel is a real must-see. It’s the highest chapel in Europe and truly unique.
